The Setting
A Bloomington Landmark Since 1905
Nestled within the 67-acre Miller Park on the shores of Miller Park Lake, the Pavilion has been at the heart of Bloomington life for over 120 years. When it opened in 1905 at a cost of $45,000, it was considered one of the finest pavilions ever constructed in a public park in Illinois.
The park sits alongside the 11-acre Miller Park Lake, where paddleboats drift in summer and the water reflects the open sky. The surrounding grounds include Miller Park Zoo, gardens, and wide open lawns — a beautiful, living backdrop for a wedding day.
We fell in love with this place the moment we saw it, and we cannot wait to say our vows here surrounded by the people we love most.
A Rich History
The Story of Miller Park Pavilion
Miller Park Pavilion has been a gathering place for community and celebration for over 120 years — and on August 29, 2026, it will add our chapter to its story.
1888
Miller’s Pasture
The City of Bloomington purchased the land once known as “Miller’s Pasture,” named after James Miller, an early Illinois settler who arrived from Virginia in 1833 and owned large tracts of the surrounding land. What began as open pasture would grow into one of the most beloved public spaces in central Illinois.
1905
The Pavilion Opens
Designed by George Miller and built at a cost of $45,000, Miller Park Pavilion opened to the public and was immediately celebrated as one of the finest pavilions ever constructed in an Illinois public park. From its earliest days it was known for its outstanding acoustics — a natural home for music and dancing.
1907
Miller Park Lake
Two years after the Pavilion opened, the 11-acre Miller Park Lake was created on the park grounds. With an average depth of 13 feet and a maximum depth of 28 feet, the lake became the park’s centerpiece — offering fishing, paddleboating, and a shimmering backdrop that has framed celebrations here for more than a century.
1977
Restoration
After more than 70 years of weddings, dances, reunions, and community gatherings, the Pavilion underwent a careful restoration to preserve it for the next generation of celebrations — ensuring this piece of Bloomington history would endure.

While You’re Here
Explore Miller Park
Miller Park is far more than a wedding venue — it’s 67 acres of history, wildlife, and recreation. Come early, bring the family, and make a full day of it.
Miller Park Zoo
One of central Illinois’s most loved attractions, Miller Park Zoo is home to greater flamingos, river otters, red pandas, snow leopards, red wolves, gibbons, lemurs, a Galapagos tortoise, and the only Sumatran tigers on display in Illinois. With exhibits including the Tropical America Rainforest, Wallaby WalkAbout, and a Children’s Zoo, it’s a perfect way to start the day.
Miller Park Lake
The 11-acre lake at the center of the park is open for paddleboating (seasonal rentals from May onward, cash only) and fishing. The lake holds largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black and white crappie, flathead catfish, and more. Non-motorized personal boats are not permitted, keeping the water peaceful and beautiful all day long.
The Putting Zoo — Mini Golf
An 18-hole lighted mini golf course near the zoo entrance, open seasonally from late May through early September. Perfect for a fun warm-up activity before the ceremony or a casual outing the day after the wedding.
Nickel Plate Road Locomotive No. 639
On permanent display in the park is the Nickel Plate Road Steam Locomotive No. 639, a “Mikado” type (2-8-2 wheel configuration) built in 1923 by Lima Locomotive Works. This historic freight engine once ran regularly from Frankfort, Indiana to Peoria, Illinois. Dedicated on November 1, 1959 — and displayed alongside its original tender and caboose — it was called Bloomington’s “First Citizen” at its dedication ceremony.
War Memorials
Miller Park is home to three memorials honoring those who served. A Civil War memorial honors veterans of that conflict. A black granite Korean & Vietnam War Memorial, dedicated in May 1988 and surrounded by red sidewalks, lists the names of Central Illinois residents killed or missing in action. A Firefighters Memorial rounds out the park’s collection of tributes to the community’s heroes.
Recreation & Outdoor Activities
The park offers something for everyone. A half-mile paved walking trail circles the park perimeter. Sand volleyball courts, softball and baseball fields, a modern playground with a splash pad, and open lawn areas make it ideal for active families. Picnic shelters, grills, and a gazebo are available throughout the grounds for relaxed gatherings before or after the celebration.
